The Story: This peaceful wildlife photograph captures a solitary American White Pelican resting quietly on a small patch of raised land rising out of the water at Farmington Bay. Sitting motionless on the ground from a safe distance, I waited for the bird to stretch or take flight, only to realize the pelican was fully settled in for a deep, undisturbed morning rest. As a wildlife conservation photographer, documenting these quiet resting periods highlights the vital importance of secure, undisturbed mud flats and islets where breeding adults can conserve the immense energy required to gather roughly 150 pounds of food for a single growing chick. The Technique: Captured from a low position sitting on the ground using a high-resolution Nikon Z8 mirrorless camera and a powerful 200-500mm Nikkor zoom lens mounted on a stable tripod. I utilized a precise, selective focus to isolate the textured feathers of the resting pelican while softening the distant water and shoreline elements into a smooth, non-distracting background.
