About the Artwork
The Story: This intimate wildlife photograph captures an American Avocet couple gracefully strolling together through the shallow waters of the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge immediately following their elegant mating ritual. With their long necks and sophisticated posture, these stunning shorebirds highlight the rich avian life that relies on Utah's wetlands for breeding. As a wildlife conservation photographer, documenting these bonds raises awareness for their delicate nesting habits, where parents will uniquely dip their belly feathers in the lake water to keep their ground-nesting eggs cool. The Technique: Captured using a high-resolution Nikon Z8 mirrorless camera and a powerful 200-500mm Nikkor lens secured on a stable tripod. To crisply isolate the elegant avoiette couple from the shimmering water, I utilized a fast shutter speed to freeze their movement and a wide aperture to create a beautiful, soft background blur.
