Death Valley National Park, Howling Wind Mesquite Sand Dunes
Experience the wind-blown Mesquite Sand Dunes in Death Valley National Park with the deepening clouds looming overhead.
100 feet at its tallest, the Mesquite Sand Dunes are named after the Mesquite Trees which grow in abundance around this area. The soft golden sand is blowing the particles through the cooling air, and the dramatic clouds are shifting with the hint of rain in the near future.
When I arrived at Death Valley on a cooler November day, I was greeted with a wind so fierce I was in danger of losing my equipment. Photographing landscapes can offer all types of weather, and I do not shy away from stormy skies - actually I prefer weather to be in my photographs as they lend a moodiness difficult to capture on clear days. While photographing the dunes, I tucked in and took as many photos as I could while lying on the ground, or in a sitting in a squat. Then I would quickly tuck my camera under my jacket to protect it as much as possible from the damaging sand. My tripod came in handy as I tried to steady the camera with each shot.
In this image, I give you the chance to feel what it is like to have the wind swirling around you while enjoying the mystery of the Mesquite Sand Dunes. The Creosote Bushes in the foreground add an extra punch of color. Add this to your National Park collection. Check this additional image to add to your Death Valley images.
